Amanda Seyfried Reflects on Decision to Turn Down 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Role
Amanda SeyfriedIn a candid discussion on the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast, acclaimed actress Amanda Seyfried spoke openly about declining the role of Gamora in Marvel's 'Guardians of the Galaxy' franchise. Despite the series' massive success, Seyfried maintains that her decision was the right one for her career at the time.
Reflecting on the offer, Seyfried admitted she was initially wary of taking a risk on what she feared could be Marvel's first flop. "Being a part of the first Marvel movie that bombs ain't good for your career", Seyfried confided. "I thought that because this was about a talking tree and a talking raccoon that it was gonna be Marvel's first bomb, and that Chris Pratt and I would never work again. I was wrong". Indeed, the Guardians films turned out to be wildly successful, collectively grossing over $2 billion globally.
Seyfried cited various reasons for declining the role, including the daunting prospect of extensive makeup required to portray the green-skinned Gamora. "I was really scared of the idea of being stuck and painted a different color", she revealed, referencing the intensive makeup routine and the concern over relocating to London for the film's demanding shoot schedule.
Moreover, Seyfried had another project that captured her interest more film with Seth MacFarlane titled 'A Million Ways to Die in the West'. This opportunity, combined with her aversion to green screen work, influenced her decision to pass on Gamora. "I just didn’t want to do it because I had done some green screen stuff and it wasn’t in my cup of tea", she said.
Despite any initial doubts, Seyfried is at peace with her choice, expressing no regrets. "I made it for myself in the moment that I made it. It was good for me then, and it’s good for me now", she asserted. She expressed happiness for Zoe Saldaña, who ultimately took on the role of Gamora, and holds no bitterness, reaffirming her belief that things unfolded as they were meant to.
