Chrissy Metz Opens Up About Challenging Past with Stepfather and Overcoming Weight Stigma

Chrissy Metz

Actress Chrissy Metz, best known for her role in "This Is Us", recently shared an intimate glimpse into her past, recounting the difficult experiences she faced with her stepfather regarding her weight. In a candid conversation on "The Jamie Kern Lima Show", Metz revealed the mental, physical, and emotional abuse she endured during her teenage years. "He would weigh me in the kitchen or threaten to lock the cupboards", Metz recalled, expressing the pain and trauma that lingered from these interactions.

Growing up in Florida as the middle child of five, Metz faced significant challenges that shaped her self-worth and self-perception. "The emotional stuff… they're like little nicks, little cuts and eventually you bleed out. It is painful", Metz shared, describing the enduring impact of her stepfather's actions. The stigma surrounding her weight was an ongoing battle, affecting her interactions with friends and strangers alike, and altering her perception of worthiness.

Despite these early struggles, fame brought about a change in how strangers treated Metz, especially in public settings like airplanes. She noted the shift from being unwelcome to a more accepting atmosphere as her public persona grew. However, she acknowledged that societal misconceptions about weight persist, highlighting the importance of overcoming the simplistic narratives of being "lazy" or unable to "put the food down".

Metz continues to navigate her path towards healing, stating, "I think I'm trying to heal those wounds slowly but surely. And it's not easy... The root of it is, ‘I'm unworthy.’" Her story sheds light on the complexities of dealing with weight stigma and the personal journey towards self-acceptance and healing from past trauma, offering inspiration to others facing similar challenges.
