Daniel Craig Reflects on Transition from Bond to 'Queer'
Daniel CraigDaniel Craig, widely recognized for his iconic portrayal of James Bond, has opened up about the profound impact that the role had on him both physically and emotionally. The transition from being the suave secret agent to starring in the upcoming film "Queer" has been a significant shift for the actor.
Craig, who starred as James Bond across five films from 2006 to 2021, revealed that the exhaustive nature of these blockbuster movies left him "empty and exhausted". He admitted that while he was playing Bond, taking on a project like "Queer" would have seemed "reactionary", as if he were attempting to showcase his acting range unnecessarily.
Directed by Luca Guadagnino, "Queer" is based on William Burroughs' semi-autobiographical novella and features Craig as William Lee, an American expat in 1950s Mexico City. The film delves into Lee's complex emotional journey as he becomes romantically involved with a younger man, Eugene Allerton, played by Drew Starkey.
Reflecting on his Bond days, Craig noted that any attempt to diversify his roles during his tenure as 007 felt unsatisfying, leaving him both physically and emotionally drained. "I was becoming a star", Craig explained, "and people wanted me in their films. Incredible. Yet, they left me empty". He expressed that the relentless pursuit of balancing life and work ultimately took a toll on him.
Despite the challenges, Craig cherishes his time as Bond and is keen to see the franchise's future direction, wishing the new Bond well. However, with "Queer", Craig is less concerned about public perception, focusing instead on the emotional complexities of the film. "Sexuality is the least interesting thing to me in this film", he mentioned, emphasizing the characters' emotional journeys over their sexual identities.
Craig remains confident that stepping away from Bond has allowed him to take on "Queer" without the constraints of his previous iconic role, embracing this new chapter with enthusiasm and a fresh perspective.
