Denise Richards Opens Up About Discussing Charlie Sheen's HIV Status with Their Daughters
Denise Richards , Charlie SheenIn a heartfelt revelation, actress Denise Richards has opened up about one of the most challenging conversations she had to have with her daughters, Sami and Lola Sheen. The conversation revolved around their father, Charlie Sheen, and his public disclosure of being HIV-positive, which he revealed in 2015.
Speaking on Jana Kramer’s "Whine Down" podcast, Denise recounted the difficult experience, explaining how she had to prepare her daughters for the news that was about to be widely publicized. Richards, 54, had hoped to shield her daughters from the various controversies surrounding their father, but this revelation necessitated a direct conversation.
The "Wild Things" actress noted that Sheen’s unexpected disclosure on the "Today" show left her in a vulnerable position. "It was everywhere", Denise recalled, emphasizing the urgency with which she collected her daughters from school to avoid them hearing about their father’s health status from others. This lack of forewarning from Sheen, Denise admitted, left her "kind of upset", and she found it "hard to explain" the situation to Sami, now 21, and Lola, now 19.
Denise shared that she had always tried to protect her daughters from the public scandals involving Sheen, whom she divorced in 2006. Despite the difficulties, she stressed the importance of open communication with her daughters. "There’s been a few things that I’ve had to have conversations with [them], but for the most part, I really tried to shelter them from a lot of stuff", she said.
The disclosure, however, was a unique challenge as it was the first time she had to explain such serious information to her children. Despite the shock, Richards assured that with the advancement of retroviral drugs, the virus is undetectable, bringing a sense of relief and hope.
