Eric Stonestreet Reflects on Scrapped 'Modern Family' Spin-off: 'It Felt a Little Hurtful'
Eric StonestreetEric Stonestreet, best known for his role as Cameron Tucker on "Modern Family," has opened up about the disappointment surrounding the cancellation of a planned spin-off focused on his character and on-screen partner, Mitchell Pritchett, played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson.
During an interview on the "In Depth With Graham Bensinger" podcast, Stonestreet candidly shared his feelings about the project's demise. "Chris Lloyd and a couple of the writers wrote a really great script that spun Jesse and I off in our life in Missouri," Stonestreet explained, noting that despite the enthusiasm from the creators, the network ultimately decided not to pursue the series.
"They just said, 'We don’t want to do it,'" he recounted. Stonestreet expressed that both he and Ferguson felt "hurt" by the decision, suspecting that their ages might have influenced the network's perception. "I think Jesse and I maybe felt like they thought of us as the old guys," he reflected, acknowledging the emotional impact of the rejection.
Despite the setback, Stonestreet maintained confidence in the project's potential, describing it as a "slam dunk" that would have resonated with audiences. "Because you had one of the creators—who had really taken such great care of making sure that show was great for so long—willing to do it," he emphasized.
While the spin-off seems unlikely to move forward, Stonestreet remains open to reuniting with the cast for a special reunion, teasing the idea of a "Modern Family" Christmas special. "There’s been talk of that," he hinted.
