Josh Gad Reflects on Voicing Olaf: A Regretful Decision

Josh Gad

In a surprising revelation, actor Josh Gad recently opened up about a regret he harbors regarding his iconic role as Olaf, the beloved snowman from Disney's "Frozen" franchise. Gad, who is now 43, admitted during an appearance at Fan Expo Canada, about his desire to have created a different voice for the character. "If I could do it all over again," Gad stated, "I would not have lent that snowman my voice. I would have created a different voice."

The actor expressed his unusual experiences in public spaces, such as supermarkets, where children often recognize him by his distinctive Olaf voice. Gad humorously demonstrated these encounters by mimicking a child's slow head turn recognition. "That was my first big mistake," he joked, acknowledging the widespread recognition his voice has gained since "Frozen" debuted in 2013.

Despite his reservations about the voice, Gad's unique vocal contribution significantly shaped Olaf’s character, making him a fan-favorite and crucial part of the "Frozen" universe. The franchise's success is undeniable, with the first two films garnering over $2.65 billion at the global box office combined.

Additionally, Gad discussed his unexpected discovery of "Frozen 3" and "Frozen 4" in development, news which reached him while he was vacationing in Greece. This revelation came as a surprise, as Gad humorously recounted, "All of a sudden, my phone’s blowing up... Nobody thought to call us up and be like, ‘Oh, by the way, we’re doing two sequels to your movie(s).’" Nonetheless, he expressed enthusiasm for the projects, hinting that they will be "unbelievable" and praising the creative directions being explored for Olaf and his friends.

While "Frozen 3" is set to hit theaters in November 2027, further plot details remain under wraps. However, original songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez are reportedly attached to the project, a promising sign for fans of the series’ memorable music.
