Kate Hudson's Regret Over Turning Down 'The Devil Wears Prada' Role

Kate Hudson

In a recent reflection on missed opportunities, actress Kate Hudson candidly shared her regret over turning down a role in the iconic 2006 film 'The Devil Wears Prada'. During an interview with Capital FM's Capital Breakfast, Hudson explained her original decision as a "bad call", citing scheduling conflicts as the main reason for passing on the chance to portray Andy Sachs, a role that eventually catapulted Anne Hathaway into the spotlight.

"That was a bad call. It was a timing thing", Hudson confessed during the interview. "It was one of those things where I couldn’t do it, and I should’ve made it happen, and I didn’t. That was one where when I saw it I was like, ‘Ugh.’" Hudson's lament comes nearly two decades after 'The Devil Wears Prada' first captivated audiences, with Meryl Streep's portrayal of the formidable fashion editor Miranda Priestly contributing to the film’s critical acclaim and box office success.

Despite her regrets, Hudson emphasized the cliché that "everything happens for a reason", though she admits to feeling a pang of what could have been every time she watches the film. Over the years, it's been revealed that Hudson was not the only high-profile actress considered for the role. Stars like Rachel McAdams, Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, and Kirsten Dunst were also on the directors' shortlist before Hathaway landed the part.

Hathaway herself has humorously noted she was the ninth choice for the role, a fact she shared on an episode of 'RuPaul's Drag Race.' The film went on to achieve immense success, grossing $327 million worldwide and earning two Oscar nominations. Its enduring popularity has since inspired a musical adaptation with contributions from Elton John, and recent reports suggest a sequel may be in the works, with Streep and Emily Blunt expected to reprise their roles.

Yet, as Hudson reflects on the past, her story serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the film industry, where the alignment of opportunities rarely aligns perfectly with timing. "It’s waves of things that are happening and people shooting at different times", Hudson explained. "It’s not like you don’t do them because you don’t want to do them. It’s like, ‘Oh, you’re doing something else.’ And it just sucked, you know?"
