Lisa Kudrow Criticizes Tom Hanks' Film 'Here' for AI Use

Lisa Kudrow, the well-known "Friends" actress, recently voiced her concerns about the use of digital de-aging technology in Tom Hanks' latest film, "Here". During an appearance on Dax Shepard's "Armchair Expert" podcast, Kudrow, 61, expressed her apprehension over the film's reliance on AI, dubbing it an "endorsement for AI".

The film "Here", directed by Robert Zemeckis, features Hanks and his former "Forrest Gump" co-star Robin Wright in a story that spans multiple generations. The movie uses advanced AI technology to de-age the actors, allowing them to portray their characters at various stages of life without the need for different actors.

Kudrow criticized this digital approach, questioning what the future holds for actors if their images can simply be digitized and reused. "It's not like it's going to ruin everything", Kudrow stated, "But what will be left? Forget actors, what about up-and-coming actors? They'll just be licensing and recycling".

The film utilizes AI tools from the company Metaphysic, which Zemeckis praised for their ability to deliver seamless transformations. He noted that the storytelling demanded such technology, as traditional methods couldn't achieve the same effect.

Tom Hanks, 68, had previously discussed the potential of AI in films, acknowledging both the possibilities and the ethical dilemmas it presents. He had famously remarked how AI’s advent could allow actors to appear in films perpetually, even posthumously.

As technology continues to advance, Kudrow's comments have sparked further debate about the role of AI in the entertainment industry and what it means for the future of acting and filmmaking.
