Meghan Markle's Candid Conversation on Online Bullying with Teens

Meghan Markle

In a heartfelt gesture to connect with young girls, Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, engaged in candid conversations about the harsh realities of online bullying and its impact on mental health. During a surprise visit on October 2 to Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara, in partnership with the mental health advocacy group #HalfTheStory, Markle addressed a group of teens to discuss her own encounters with online harassment.

As Larissa May, founder of #HalfTheStory, recounted, the event provided a platform where participants, including Markle, spoke openly about scenarios involving bullying. "Meghan talked about being one of the most bullied people in the world," May shared with Vanity Fair. The interactive session allowed the young girls to express their emotions through activities involving emoji signs, highlighting how these bullying scenarios could affect their emotional well-being.

Coinciding with these efforts, and marking the International Day of the Girl on October 11, Meghan's Archewell Foundation announced its collaboration with Girls Inc., Melinda French Gates' Pivotal Ventures, and the Oprah Winfrey Charitable Foundation. Together, they launched Social Media U—an educational program designed to help young girls foster healthier, more balanced relationships with technology, aiming to enhance digital wellness and combat the negative aspects of social media engagement.

The initiative is part of Archewell’s broader aim to support digital safety and foster responsible technology use. Through Social Media U, girls in underserved communities are equipped with critical tools to navigate the digital landscape confidently, ensuring their online interactions are both empowering and protective.

Markle’s involvement underscores the importance of vulnerability and transparency in discussing the challenges faced by today's youth in a digital age. Her personal stories resonate deeply, serving as a reminder of the pressing need for supportive networks and educational resources to combat online bullying effectively.
