Nicolas Cage's Son Weston Granted Mental Health Diversion in Assault Case
Nicolas CageNicolas Cage's son, Weston Cage, has been given an opportunity to avoid prison after allegedly assaulting his mother, Christina Fulton, in what has been described as a "vicious" and "excruciating" attack. A Los Angeles judge has sentenced the 34-year-old to a two-year mental health diversion program, recognizing a significant mental health disorder as a major factor in the events leading to the assault charges.
During the hearings, Judge Enrique Monguia expressed satisfaction with the decision, stating, "Mr. Cage does suffer from an eligible mental health disorder. I’m satisfied it was a significant factor in the commission of the charged offenses. It’s obvious he was suffering a breakdown at the time".
Weston's attorney, Michael A. Goldstein, highlighted his client's ongoing commitment to treatment, noting that Weston "hasn’t felt this good in years" and is "in a good head space". Goldstein emphasized Weston's progress since the incident, including his engagement and relocation to a new living environment.
The incident, which occurred in April 2024, involved alarming accusations from Fulton, who claimed Weston attacked her after she arrived at his apartment, reportedly set on fire. She detailed the traumatic assault, alleging Weston strangled and slammed her, causing severe injuries.
Despite the severity of the accusations, Fulton supports the court's decision for treatment over incarceration, hoping this path will provide Weston the help he needs. "Please help my son", she implored during the court proceedings.
The case is set for a progress report hearing, ensuring that Weston adheres to the conditions of the diversion program, which includes avoiding harassment of his alleged victims and abstaining from weapon possession.
The outcome reflects a broader consideration within the justice system regarding the treatment of individuals with mental health issues, aiming to address root causes rather than solely administering punitive measures. As the legal process continues, both Fulton and Weston face the challenges of healing and rehabilitation in the wake of the incident.
