Rob Lowe and Michael J. Fox Recall '80s Bus Incident with Celebrities
Michael J. Fox , Rob LoweRob Lowe and Michael J. Fox recently looked back at a memorable moment from the '80s when they were caught smoking pot on a bus full of celebrities. During an interview on Ted Danson's 'Where Everybody Knows Your Name' podcast, Lowe shared the story of an environmentalist bus tour through California promoting Prop 65, a measure aimed at cleaning up the water system. The tour, organized in 1986, featured a star-studded lineup including Whoopi Goldberg, Cher, Judd Nelson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Robert Downey Jr., Jane Fonda, and Danny Glover.
Lowe recalled that they were pulled over by the police not just for speeding, but also because he and Fox were smoking pot out of the top of the Greyhound bus's emergency hatch. The incident was so surprising that the police officer was met with a 'clown car' effect as celebrities poured out of the bus. Despite the mishap, Lowe has since been open about his struggles with addiction, achieving sobriety in 1990 with the help of his wife, Sheryl Berkoff.
Reflecting on the event, Lowe humorously questioned the effectiveness of celebrity activism, highlighting the somewhat absurd nature of their influence on public opinion regarding serious issues like clean water advocacy. Fox, committed to the cause at the time, emphasized the straightforward and important nature of the issue, advocating for people's right to know what they are being exposed to.
