Rupert Grint Faces $2.3 Million Tax Bill After Losing HMRC Legal Battle
Rupert GrintActor Rupert Grint, best known for his role as Ron Weasley in the "Harry Potter" series, has been ordered to pay £1.8 million (approximately $2.3 million) in taxes to the United Kingdom's HMRC after a recent tribunal ruling. The dispute traces back to the 2011-2012 tax year, during which Grint received £4.5 million from a company managing his business affairs. He classified this sum as a "capital asset", which typically incurs a lower tax rate. However, HMRC argued that it should be taxed as income.
The tribunal, led by Judge Harriet Morgan, ruled in favor of HMRC, stating that the funds "derived substantially the whole of its value from the activities of Mr. Grint", and thus should be subject to income tax. This decision follows Grint's previous legal battles over tax matters, including a 2016 case where he was denied a £1 million tax refund.
Despite these setbacks, Grint's net worth remains substantial. Market Realist estimates it to be around $50 million, largely from his earnings from the Harry Potter films, where he reportedly earned $70 million.
Outside of his tax issues, Grint has continued to work in both film and television, including a notable role in the Apple TV series "Servant". Personally, he shares his life with Georgia Groome, known for her role in "Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging", and they welcomed their daughter, Wednesday, in May 2020.
