Sally Struthers Opens Up About Her Experience with Betty White
Betty White , Sally StruthersIn a series of recent interviews, actress Sally Struthers has candidly shared her less-than-pleasant experiences with the late Betty White, revealing a specific incident that left her feeling "fat-shamed" by the beloved television icon. Struthers, known for her role in "All in the Family", recounted the experience during an episode of the "Let's Talk About That" podcast.
Struthers described White, who passed away in 2021 just shy of her 100th birthday, as a "very passive-aggressive woman". The incident in question occurred decades ago at White's Los Angeles home, where they were working on a pilot for a new game show. According to Struthers, White's housekeeper brought in a plate of cookies during a meeting, and as Struthers reached for one, White commented, "Oh, I wouldn’t do that if I were you, dear, you don’t need a cookie". This remark, which Struthers perceived as "fat-shaming", was made in front of their peers, leaving a lasting impression on Struthers.
Despite the fond memories many hold of White, Struthers felt that her own interaction was less than golden. "I didn’t have such a great experience with her", she explained, contrasting her relationship with White to the warm friendships she had with other "Golden Girls" cast members, such as Bea Arthur and Rue McClanahan.
While Struthers acknowledges White's impact and the universal love she garnered throughout her extensive career, she reflects on her personal experience to remind audiences that not every interaction may match public perception. White remains a cherished figure in entertainment history, celebrated for her work on shows like "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", "Match Game", and "Pyramid."
