Selena Gomez Opens Up About Vulnerability and Motherhood

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez is embracing vulnerability and challenging societal norms as she opens up about deeply personal aspects of her life. The Only Murders in the Building actress recently shared her struggles with fertility and her decision to speak publicly about her health issues, emphasizing that being open is not something to be ashamed of.

During a Women in Film event in Beverly Hills, Gomez candidly addressed critics, stating, "I truly believe that there is power in being vulnerable and telling people when you need help or when you want help. So yeah, I shared that I can’t carry a child. Yeah, I shared that I have bipolar. F–k off. That’s what my life is. That’s who I am."

Gomez's health challenges, including her diagnosis of lupus in 2013, a kidney transplant in 2017, and her bipolar disorder diagnosis in 2020, have significantly impacted her life decisions. She explained that her medical conditions could endanger both her life and a potential child's health, which led her to openly grieve the idea of carrying her own child.

Despite these challenges, Gomez remains hopeful about becoming a mother one day through surrogacy or adoption. "I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone. I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me," she shared. "I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby."

The actress and singer passionately advocates for honesty and resilience, urging others not to feel ashamed if they don't have everything figured out. "Do not ever let anyone tell you that you are not a good person, that you aren’t kind, that you won’t treat people with respect. That is so cool of you guys," she encouraged. "Screw anyone who tells you you’re a victim. You’re a survivor in my book."

Through her openness, Gomez continues to inspire others by showing that vulnerability and authenticity can be powerful tools for connection and healing.
