Whoopi Goldberg Reflects on the Unshakeable Friendships with Robin Williams and Christopher Reeve

In a heartfelt reflection, Whoopi Goldberg, 68, opened up about her enduring friendships with the late Robin Williams and Christopher Reeve, describing them as her life's "rocks." Known for their iconic roles and profound impact on and off-screen, both Williams and Reeve played significant roles in Goldberg's life, teaching her resilience and the power of moving forward amid adversity.

Goldberg recently spoke about these bonds during an emotional episode of 'The View,' which featured Reeve's three children—Matthew, Alexandra, and Will—who were there to discuss the upcoming documentary, 'Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story.' During the show, Goldberg reminisced about her surprise at being approached by Reeve for his directorial debut in the 1997 television film 'In the Gloaming,' a poignant narrative addressing the AIDS crisis.

"I was shocked that he called me," Goldberg recalled. "I was like, ‘Are you sure?’ He said, ‘Yeah, I want you.’ I was like, ‘Okay,’" she said, before adding humorously that she didn’t even question the role or the project as a show of trust: "I don’t want to know. Whatever you want."

The friendship between Reeve and Williams, which began during their college days at Juilliard, was one of profound mutual support—Reeve supported Williams' struggles and vice versa, even after Reeve's tragic horse-riding accident left him paralyzed.

Goldberg highlighted how these friendships taught her strength and perseverance, despite not being able to see them as often as she might have wished. "They were never far from my soul because they taught us how to actually figure out how to move forward," she reflected. "I just had the greatest time. I was lucky."

The documentary 'Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story,' which underscores their friendship, includes interviews not only with Goldberg but with other close friends like Susan Sarandon, Jeff Daniels, and Glenn Close, who poignantly commented on the depth of Reeve and Williams' bond: "I always felt that if Chris was still around, Robin would still be alive."

As the documentary prepares for its encore presentation, it serves as a testament to the enduring legacies of Reeve and Williams and their impact on those who loved them—none more so than Goldberg, who cherishes their memories as guiding lights in her life.
