Will Smith's Flatulence Incident on 'Men in Black' Set: A Director's Tale

In a humorous recounting of on-set hijinks during the production of the 1997 sci-fi comedy "Men in Black", director Barry Sonnenfeld recently revealed an unexpected interruption caused by Will Smith's flatulence. Appearing on the podcast "Let's Talk Off Camera With Kelly Ripa," Sonnenfeld shared how the unfortunate yet amusing incident led to a three-hour evacuation of the film set.

During the filming of a scene where Smith and Tommy Lee Jones were positioned inside a "hermetically sealed" chamber, designed to mimic the interior of their characters' transforming car, the unexpected happened. As Sonnenfeld called "Roll camera," Smith apologetically announced, "Oh, Jesus, so sorry. Tommy, so sorry. Baz, get the ladder." Tommy Lee Jones, ever the professional, assured, "That's fine, Will. No worries, Will. Don't worry, Will."

The sealed environment quickly became uninhabitable, leading to a hasty retreat by Jones and the evacuation of the entire stage. "Will Smith is a farter," Sonnenfeld quipped on the podcast. "It's just some people are. And you really don’t want to be inside a very small hermetically sealed space with a Will Smith fart."

The incident became one of Sonnenfeld's most memorable stories from the beloved franchise, highlighting Smith's charm and the camaraderie between the cast and crew despite the unexpected challenges. While Smith has yet to publicly comment on the humorous retelling, the story adds another layer to his legacy on the iconic film set.

Sonnenfeld, who also directed the sequels "Men in Black II" and "Men in Black 3," concluded with light-hearted remarks about Smith's diet, noting his suspicion about Smith's low carbohydrate intake based on his culinary experiences with the star.

Despite the unexpected break in filming, "Men in Black" went on to become a major success, spawning a franchise that continues to be fondly remembered by fans worldwide.
